Birthday night 08

For the first time we had Tow-B on the big screen - it was strange seeing his smiling face 6 foot tall - staring out over his domain.

As usual, everyone left with a present – this year a pocket facemask.

For members who have not yet qualified or certified to use one we will be running sessions with them over the coming weeks. Personal protection and safety during rescues has long been a focus in Sthoee and it was great that that we were able to give everyone such high quality kit this year.

Birthday night is always special, this year we had birthday greetings sent from as far away as New Zealand!

It is staggering to believe that Sthoee Lifeguards Dublin is seventeen years old. This has been a special year with great successes all round including;

- A new emphasised focus on lifesaving
- Development of the Dublin based pool lifeguard programme
- Multiple Dublin based beach lifeguard courses
- A staggering number of defibrillator installations and training across Ireland.
- The best equipped open water lifesaving programme available.
- The new rescue boat programme

The next 12 months will see some change with an increased focus on training trainers and developing the beach and boat programme.

In the pool we will see an increased focus on dry training and first aid with a greater roll out of defibrillation.

This is an incredible journey and we are so grateful to everyone who makes it happen - go raibh maith agaibh - you know who you are.

10 things you didn’t know about sthoee

#1 Tow-B (originally Toby) was named after a character in an Australian soap opera and first appeared in sthoee at our 5th birthday party. (he was surfing on an icing surfboard across the cake). He became Tow-B when we registered our first rescue boat.

She's gone

Visitors to our website and blog will be more than aware that we have had an affair over the last number of years.

True there should only be one boat in any Club's life, we have been unfaithful, today we lost one.

Asgard II was lost off France this morning, crew and trainees are all safe.

When she berthed in Howth she was always visible from the beach, when she sailed by the island she was a sight to behold and memorably stopped people in their tracks during swims and assessments. She was part of the landscape around here and, like her namesake and predecessor, was firmly embedded in our local culture and history.

Always sorry to hear of the loss of any boat, particularly sail. She'll be missed around here.

Sthoee Lifeguards Dublin
11/9/08

"Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea would like to compliment the crew of the Asgard and the French for their co-operation in ensuring that all on board were brought to safety."

ABC - AED, Beach, CPR.....

This is just silly.

Busy day, new AED implementation in Wicklow with just about as enthusiastic a group of people as you could have . Community based AED is a shot in the arm, when you do it three times a week its addictive. (and our first Wicklow implementation!)

If you are a club member at any level and want to get involved just shout.

Straight back to DCU and a further full course with a great group and some fun initiatives !

We are ramping up to summer as we speak open water getting close and we are planning a few surprises for launching day

Congats to the new beach lifeguards, AEDs, thanks to the support team and good luck to the gang doing exams

Sthoee Lifesaving Dublin

We get asked why we don't update the site so often - are we not up to much?

Its actually the other way around. Sine the last update we have assisted in implementing heaps of new AED including our first in Meath and Cork, have started the beach programme, launched the boat programme. Its likely this year that we will do more AED than water awards , quite incredible.

The big news is that this week we will be contacting a segment of the waiting list for a restricted entry.

Big coastguard event in Howth this weekend - head out if you get the chance.

its the best time of year for sthoee, we have picked our our new BBQ, another new set of mannekins arrived yesterday and some fun plans for greater community interaction.

keep up the good work and if you are in exam mode - we're rooting 4u (but make sure that Mark knows you are coming back!)

take care & Happy Pangea Day

gear, pants, and wally hats

Its that time of the year - we go though the gear and people get giddy

For the record yes we do use comfort on the mannequin clothing (people would not believe it last night) and

Included in this mailing is a new form for completion by your guardians / parents (or you if you are 18+). This is essential for everyone and is compulsory from 2008.

Staff - there are some changes happening affecting us all (all good) MC will be in in contact and will speak Sunday otherwise speak John, Mark or Kate
